Meet Our Teachers & Staff

Jefferson Center

ALI WINTROW

Ali has a CDA (Child Development Associate) Degree and is attending University of Toledo for her Bachelors Degree. She is a Toledo native, is married and has an infant son. A craftsperson, one of her favorite pastimes is restoring furniture. A classic rock fan, Ali’s secret vacation objective is a trip to France to visit Jim Morrison’s resting place.

CLARA GOMEZ

From the Dominican Republic, where she earned a degree in Computer Science, Clara speaks Spanish and English and also has six years of previous experience with a child care organization. She is a “floater” which means working at where needed at Toledo Day Nursery. She says she loves the opportunity to spend time at different centers and age groups. Leisure time pursuits include spending time with her husband and four children, listening to music and finding good sales shopping.

COURTNEY LARGENT

With Toledo Day Nursery since 2000, Courtney has her CDA and works in infant care, ages 6 weeks through 18 months. With her daughters Kennedy and Keely, and son Keaton, she enjoys spending time with her mom and siblings and their families. Her interests also include what she calls her “hidden talent”, singing at weddings and many other special occasions.

LAUREN DAVIS

With a degree in psychology and 15 years of experience in early childhood education, Lauren is passionate about her work at Toledo Day Nursery. She teaches in the mixed age infant/toddler classroom at Jefferson. Currently pursuing an infant toddler CDA via a local YWCA program, Lauren says she is always seeking opportunities to grow as an early childhood educator.

StickneyCenter

BREANNA HANSEN

After attending Owens Community College to earn a Medical Assistant degree, Breanna enjoyed and gained experience in child care. She works in mixed age infants and toddlers at our Stickney center, has plans to get her CDA, and is engaged to be married soon. A Toledo native, spending time with her family and fiance are favorite pastimes. Dream vacation: a cruise to someplace warm and exotic.

CHRISTINE NADEAU

Working on her certification as a Child Development Associate in the Toledo YWCA program, Christine joined us in August, 2017. She teaches in the preschool classroom at Stickney. In her leisure time, she enjoys family time, and outdoor activities like going fishing.

MAKIYA BROWN

From Lansing, Michigan and new to Toledo, Makiya has six years of experience in early childhood education and has plans to get certified. She will be working in our toddler classroom. Leisure time interests include scrapbooking and bike riding in good weather. Her favorite place to visit someday – Paris, France.

STACY SLAGEL

A Toledo native, Stacy attended Columbus State Community College studying early childhood development, then married and spent 27 years in Cincinnati raising a family. Now back in Toledo working with Early Head Start infants at our Stickney center, she plans to return to school for her CDA. Her leisure pursuits include arts and crafts and lots of family time. Secret wish: going deep sea fishing.

TANITRA SMITH

With a Bachelors Degree in Education from Bowling Green State University, Tanitra has been with Toledo Day Nursery for several years. She says she enjoys working with the children in the Head Start program at Stickney and putting smiles on their faces. Alway expanding her horizons, she is also working on a Masters Degree in social work.

VALERIE GOLDSMITH

Earning her Early Childhood Education degree at Owens Community College, Valerie then joined Toledo Day Nursery, working in the mixed age infant/toddler classroom at Stickney. Currently she teaches preschool and is part of a staff there that she says is like family. The most rewarding parts of her job? The excitement children show when they learn a new skill, and how loved they make her feel. Valerie has two of her own, Kiara, 17 and Ternek, 14.

Mosaic Center

SHELLY RANKINS

Earning a Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Education from BGSU, Shelly has a decade of experience in child care. She is teaching our new second preschool class at the Mosaic center in south Toledo. From Swanton, Ohio, she recently married and lives in Toledo. Hobbies and interests include flower arranging, baking specialty cakes and spending lots of time time outdoors. Dream vacation wish: Hawaii.

Rosary Center

BECCA HUMBERT

Becca teaches at our newest pre-k classroom. It’s located in the Rosary Cathedral School on Collingwood in Toledo. Her qualifications and training include a degree from Ohio State. In her leisure time, she enjoys outdoor pursuits, especially hiking and tennis, and indoors likes reading and spending time with family. Becca tells us her dream vacation would be a trip to Australia.

Administrative Staff

KAREN L. MCCOY, Ph.D.

Appointed President of our non-profit organization in 2014, Karen holds a Doctor of Philosophy from Pennsylvania State University, and Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees from Ohio University. She has years of administrative experience and accomplishment in NAEYC- accredited early childhood education. Dr. McCoy’s much appreciated leadership and dedication at Toledo Day Nursery continues to uphold our 141-year legacy of care and service to the children and families of Toledo, especially those in need.

JULIE BARRIENTES

A native of Toledo, Julie began working at Toledo Day Nursery in high school and has been with us for 29 years. She attended Davis College and helped us grow from manually typed ledger cards to modern day digital files. She capably manages our office and organizational procedures. She and her husband Sam have three daughters. Leisure time interests include gardening, fitness exercising , and playing pool.

CHELSEA DAVIS

Assistant Director at the Toledo Day Nursery Stickney Center, Chelsea, graduated from Ohio State University in 2012 with a BA in Human Development Family Science. She taught high school for a few years, began directing children’s ministries at her church and then discovered her calling. She says I absolutely love caring for and teaching children during their fundamental first years. My favorite thing is the exchange of blowing kisses from preschoolers as they walk down the hall past my office. I know we are greatly impacting these young lives.

ERICKA DINKENS

With a BA in Business Administration & Marketing /Management from Lourdes College, and years of experience, Ericka joined Toledo Day Nursery in 2012. She manages the unique bookkeeping needs of our non-profit organization and enjoys her occasional visits with the children and their teachers. In her leisure time, she loves to travel and make memories with her own two beautiful children who she says “are her world”.

JULIA SMITH

After receiving her degree from Bowling Green State University in 2015, Julia began working as an early education teacher and soon joined Toledo Day Nursery. She oversees the curriculum here at Toledo Day Nursery as our Curriculum Specialist.
